‘Handmade, ethical, sustainable, organically stylish’
Jo-Liza International was a new - to - me line I discovered last month at the NY NOW AUGUST 2021 trade show here in New York.
As a lover of everything woven, I was immediately pulled into the booth attracted to the collection of beautifully woven furniture, lighting & accessories.
What immediately stood out with Jo-Liza was the completely unique and intricate woven patterns combined with fresh and interesting furniture frames. In today's saturated market, woven pieces are a dime a dozen and can often become very generic looking but all of the pieces in the Jo-Liza collection are original, expertly designed and intricately crafted.
The brand, founded in Los Angeles in 1992 by Liza Anson features design & material influenced and sourced from the Philippines and Southeast Asia.
Many of the pieces feature woven seagrass around wrought iron frames showcasing designs inspired by local flora and fauna.
Jo-Liza partners with skilled artisans that bring their generational craftsmanship & artistry into making each piece a true expression of Liza’s designs.
The brand actually has a very interesting backstory and rich history:
‘Jo-Liza was established by the late Severina (Viring) de Asis in 1972 offering rare antiques and one-of-a-kind items she had bought from her travels abroad. With her distinctive taste and eye for quality, she became known as “Asia’s Queen of Antiques” and was able to build a retailing empire.
True to her legacy as one of the pioneers in the furniture trade, she started manufacturing Venetian style mirrors and furniture which she exported in the United States and Europe.
Continuing her legacy, her daughter, Liza opened Jo-Liza International in Los Angeles in 1991. Liza continues to design new collections according to the latest trends and her and specifications. Today, Liza is relaunching her latest line of furniture and home accessories inspired by organic materials to convey the essence of earth, sea, and fire.’
Jo-Liza International was chosen as one of the “BEST of the BEST” by the New York Metro chapter of ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) in February 2014.
Most recently, the brand was a winner of the IFDA Selects Furniture at the NY NOW AUGUST 2021 trade show for their gorgeous Fern Fairy Chair (my favorite piece in the collection).
